Linking Is Vital

Many of us do remember the old Nokia ad saying “connecting people”. Connecting people should not be of our concern, but connecting ideas and thoughts is important. Thus, if someone wants to focus on writing paragraphs and essays, he is supposed to know about how transitions and conjunctions play their roles. Perfectly as one is able to compose, he should know how to link the sentences or paragraphs. The flow of ideas is important and connectors contribute to the effectiveness of the idea representation in a paper.

About Transitions & Conjunctions

There are many books and articles about how such linking words are employed. Let’s take the following example: John needs help. This is a sentence that has a completed idea, also known as the “main clause”. However, Because John needs help seems incomplete since the reader of this sentence is expecting something more than this sentence. Thus, incomplete sentences are called fragmented. From the name, it is clear that the sentence is broken and incomplete. So, by saying Because John needs help, he called me, it might become clearer. Thus, linking words make magic indeed. There are several types of them to keep in mind.

  • Conjunctions: Although she is tired, she wants to continue. Here, the word ‘although’ is functioning as conjunction. Although she is tired is not complete as mentioned before, but it should be connected to the complete one.
  • Transitions: She is tired. Nevertheless, she wants to continue. When two complete ideas are linked, then the word employed for such purpose is a transition. She is tired as well as she wants to continue are sentences with a completed idea, not fragmented ones.
  • Coordinating conjunctions: She is tired, yet she wants to continue. As is in the case of transitions, the word yet serves as

a connector of two main clauses. At the college, many may have come across the notion of FANBOYS (For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So).

Why Employ These Words

The purpose is important. It is not just to put some words to create linking. There are several meanings to use, thus creating good content for the reader.

She called me yesterday since she had some problems. Such uses are for creating cause-and-effect meaning. There are other words such as since, as, because, inasmuch as, etc.

She called me yesterday although she was angry at me. Such uses are for creating the meaning of concession. Here, the effect is that one thing or event does not hinder happening of another event. For example, she called me would happen despite the fact that she was angry at me. There are other words such as in spite of, despite, although, even though, etc.

While some people think that it is good, others have a different opinion about that. Such uses are for creating a meaning of contrast. In case of comparison and contrast, such words are really important and practical in use. There are other words such as while, whereas, etc.

Some Important Things to Keep In Mind

To use or not to use these words? Of course, to use. But there may be problem of using them more than needed. No piece of writing should be flooded with transitions or conjunctions. Wise usage is advised. Thus, the first piece of advice is to use them as much as needed — not more, not less. The second thing to mention is focusing on punctuation. This is very critical related to usage of these words. Every type of these connectors will require some other type of punctuation.

The other important thing to mention is how syntactically they are employed. Each of the types is of special use in terms of grammar. Briefly speaking, numbers, punctuation and syntax are the three main factors to be careful about.
